In a remarkable archaeological discovery, the remains of a “possible temple” dating back 1,400 years have been unearthed on farmland near Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, shedding light on the power and wealth of the East Anglian kings from the 7th century.

Excavations conducted in the summer at Rendlesham revealed the foundations of three timber buildings, one of which is identified as a potential temple. The site also provided evidence of metalworking activities from the 7th century.

The discoveries at Rendlesham, near Woodbridge, follow last year’s uncovering of the remains of a large timber royal hall, affirming the site as a settlement of the East Anglian kings. The recent findings include two graves of unknown dates, as well as evidence of earlier human activity during the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman periods.

The archaeological project, known as Rendlesham Revealed and funded by the lottery, conducted the excavations. The site, described by the Venerable Bede in his Ecclesiastical History Of The English People in 731 CE as an East Anglian royal center, is believed to be the location of an extensive royal complex covering 50 hectares, making it unique in the archaeology of fifth to eighth-century England.

The principal academic adviser for the project, Professor Christopher Scull of Cardiff University and University College London, highlighted the significance of the discoveries. The possible temple, or cult house, represents rare evidence of pre-Christian beliefs at a royal site. Its distinctive and robust foundations suggest a special purpose, similar to structures elsewhere in England identified as temples or cult houses. This suggests a potential use for pre-Christian worship by the early kings of the East Angles.

The site’s dimensions, around 20 football pitches in size, emphasize the scale and complexity of the East Anglian royal center. The excavations have been completed, and preliminary results are expected next year following the analysis of the findings. The discoveries contribute valuable insights into the cultural and religious practices of early English society, further enhancing our understanding of the historical significance of the East Anglian kings during this period.

Early Wednesday morning, a preliminary 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported near San Jose, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic event occurred at 4:06 a.m. local time and had its epicenter approximately 10 miles east of San Jose.

The earthquake, while relatively small in magnitude, could have been felt by residents in the vicinity, though there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The USGS frequently provides preliminary information shortly after an earthquake to give an initial assessment of its location and magnitude.

Given the modest magnitude of the earthquake, it is unlikely to cause significant structural damage. However, the impact can vary based on factors such as the depth of the earthquake, the distance from populated areas, and local geological conditions.

The San Jose area, situated in California, is part of a seismically active region prone to earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Earthquakes, both small and large, are common in this region, and residents are generally accustomed to such seismic activity.

Local authorities and emergency services will likely monitor the situation closely, and residents may be advised to stay alert for any aftershocks that could follow the initial earthquake. It is a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness in earthquake-prone areas, where individuals and communities should have plans in place to ensure safety during seismic events.

As more information becomes available, authorities will provide updates on the earthquake’s impact and any necessary precautions for the affected area.

On Wednesday, Vanuatu, a South Pacific Ocean nation, experienced a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic event’s epicenter was located in Port-Olry, and it occurred during the early morning hours local time.

The earthquake’s depth was recorded at approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), signifying a relatively shallow occurrence beneath the Earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes, particularly in coastal regions, can pose an increased risk of generating tsunamis, although the USGS did not provide information regarding any potential tsunami threats in this case.

Vanuatu, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is known for its susceptibility to seismic activity due to the tectonic interactions in the region. Earthquakes are not uncommon in this area, and the local population is generally accustomed to the occurrence of such natural events.

As of the initial reports, there have been no immediate details regarding casualties or damages resulting from the earthquake. The region and relevant authorities will likely conduct assessments to determine the impact of the seismic activity on local communities and infrastructure.

Given the seismic nature of the Pacific Ring of Fire, countries in this region, including Vanuatu, are well-prepared with monitoring systems and disaster response mechanisms. The information about the earthquake’s magnitude, depth, and location provided by organizations like the USGS contributes to the overall understanding of seismic activity and assists in coordinating emergency response efforts.

It’s essential for residents in earthquake-prone areas to stay informed about safety protocols and to be prepared for aftershocks, as they are common following a significant seismic event. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary to ensure the well-being of the affected population.

Earthquake with 67 magnitude kill 1 in southern Philippines

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck the eastern side of Indonesia on Wednesday, leaving authorities on alert but with no immediate reports of casualties or damages in the affected area.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located 94 kilometers (58 miles) west of Tobelo in Indonesia’s North Maluku province, and it occurred at a significant depth of 116 kilometers (72 miles).

Despite the strength of the quake, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency reassured the public that there was no potential danger of a tsunami. However, they cautioned about the possibility of aftershocks, urging residents to remain vigilant in the aftermath of the seismic event.

Indonesia, being a vast archipelago with a population exceeding 270 million people, is no stranger to seismic activity. The country is positioned along the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults encircling the Pacific Basin, making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The frequent occurrence of such natural disasters underscores the importance of preparedness and monitoring systems in the region.

The earthquake serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerability to geological events. Last year, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck West Java’s Cianjur city, claiming the lives of at least 331 people and injuring nearly 600. This event was notably the deadliest in Indonesia since the devastating 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, which resulted in the tragic loss of approximately 4,340 lives.

The catastrophic impact of seismic activity on Indonesia is not a recent phenomenon. In 2004, a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that caused unparalleled devastation. More than 230,000 people lost their lives across a dozen countries, with a significant portion of the casualties occurring in Indonesia’s Aceh province.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Indonesia in managing and mitigating the impact of natural disasters. The nation must continue to invest in resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and public awareness campaigns to minimize the loss of life and property during such events. The recent earthquake, fortunately, did not result in immediate casualties or damages, underscoring the importance of effective disaster preparedness measures in the region.

Vietnam calls for short-term visa waivers for major tourism markets like China and India.

It is in a bid to drive tourism recovery by Vietnam’s tourism ministry.

Vietnam will become the third country after Sri Lanka and Thailand to allow visa-free entry for Indians.

It will happen only if there is implementation of this policy.

Nguyn Van Jung, Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism also suggested waivers for visitors from wealthy countries.

Such countries include Australia, Canada, the U.S. and the remaining 20 members of the E.U. A report by a Vietnamese news agency said.

Currently, only citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden and Finland can enter Vietnam without a visa, the report said.

Thailand has granted visa-free entry for Indian nationals since November 10.

The tourism ministry undertook this step as to boost tourism in Thailand.

Last month, Sri Lankan Cabinet approved the policy to issue free tourist visas to travellers from India and six other countries.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry in a statement said that this would be carried out as a pilot project effective until March 31, 2024.

The Cabinet approved free entry to travellers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand with immediate effect.

India is traditionally Sri Lanka’s top inbound tourism market.

In the September arrival figures, India topped with over 30,000 arrivals or 26% with Chinese tourists trailing at over 8,000 arrivals as the second largest group.

Tourist arrivals to the island had slumped since the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.

The bombing has killed 270 persons, including 11 Indians and injured over 500 persons.
